Not all laser printers are created equal. The same applies to toner cartridges. In order to require customers to buy their cartridges, each manufacturer uses a different design so that only their replacement cartridge will fit inside their printer. While this is good news for them in terms of profits, it can potentially create a complex problem for customers to solve. Because there are so many companies who make them, finding compatible toner cartridges means knowing exactly who made it. What's more, most companies have several models, so you must also know the exact make and model of the printer. The good news is that there are three reliable methods for determining the right cartridge.
The Best Place to Start is the Owner's Manual
Most new printers come with an operator's manual to assist the user in knowing how to set it up and replace used or worn parts. Ideally there should be specific instructions (including part numbers you will need to jot down) on how to replace an empty toner cartridge. If you don't have a booklet, see if your installation disk has a PDF version of the manual. If neither is available, it's time to go surfing on the Internet for an online manual.
What to Do If No Manual is Available?
If you are unable to determine the model through the manual, you still have options available. Most modern printers come with technical specifications on a sticker found on the printer itself. The label is often white or silver and can usually be found on the back or the bottom of the unit. Newer cartridges should also give some information such as a part number. Between these two alternatives, you should find yourself back on the right track.
How to Proceed If You Just Can't Determine the Model
It may be that you don't have an owner's manual for the printer you have, either because you misplaced it, it failed to come with one, or you purchased a used or refurbished item. You may have searched online only to realize you didn't know where to begin searching or no manual exists online. You've looked for the model number on the printer and you've come up short.
