Canon Ink Cartridges in the UK: Technology Notes
Canon printers are among the most highly regarded brands in the UK and the world. Part of the reason for Canon's success is the company's attention to printer cartridge technology. Canon has adopted a technology called FINE or "Full Photolithographic Inkjet Nozzle Engineering." This technology delivers exceptional image quality, unmatched sharpness and extraordinary detail. In addition, FINE also improves colouring, colour gamut and colour fastness. The gamut of a system is the array of possible colours within a system of colours. The larger the gamut, the closer the system approaches the natural spectrum, which contains all possible colours that can be detected by the human eye. FINE technology also includes the print head that's built into Canon ink cartridges.
The Basics of Canon Inkjet Cartridge Technology: LUCIA Inks
LUCIA inks have a pigment-based formulation that delivers vibrant colours and crisp blacks and greys. These inks have superior characteristics that allow them to fix securely onto a receiving medium such as paper. LUCIA inks have 12 colours that enable smooth gradations and reduce graininess in images. All these characteristics combine in original Canon ink cartridges to increase the accuracy of colour reproduction. In addition, LUCIA inks contain a higher proportion of polymers that results in increased image longevity. LUCIA-based systems can be quite expensive, however. As an alternative, Canon offers 8-colour ink cartridges on some of its printers and multifunction devices. Multifunction devices encompass printing, scanning and copying.
Other Facets of Canon's Printing Technology
Some Canon printers use a proprietary process called "ambient light correction" that works along with their photo printing software. Ambient light correction allows users to adjust the colour output to match the lighting conditions in which the photo will be displayed. Canon printers with this technology produce prints up to 13in x 19in, can accommodate a good range of paper weights and have 2 paper paths. Selected models are Wi-Fi capable, so users can access their printers virtually anywhere. The dye-based inks contained in Canon's printer cartridges produce vivid, long-lasting colours. Finally, for CAD printers, Canon offers a unique 5-colour pigment/dye ink system that delivers vibrant and crisp images.
Beware of Counterfeit Canon Printer Cartridges
Like many reputable companies with popular printers, Canon has been besieged by a proliferation of counterfeit toner. Use of these products, according to Canon, "creates a risk of poor equipment performance, low toner yield, inferior print quality and toner leakage." Toner leaks can lead to equipment failure. In addition, counterfeit products violate the law. In the US, Canon conducted a "civil raid" against one such counterfeiter. Products were seized; the counterfeiter was fined a significant sum and enjoined from further selling. Canon has the following disclaimer on its site:"Canon is not responsible or liable for any malfunctions, damages or injuries caused by using non-Canon products, including counterfeit Canon products."
