Black Ink Cartridges: A FAQ for UK Printer Owners
Selecting and buying the correct black ink cartridges for your printer in the UK can sometimes seem to be a daunting task, given the virtually endless selection and huge price variances. Here are some frequently asked questions (FAQ) that might clear up some of the confusion.
Q. Can I use ink cartridges from different companies in my printer if they look the same?
A. Probably not, unless the black ink cartridge is specifically labelled for use with your printer make and model. Although cartridges may look the same, it's likely that they use different parts. In fact, you risk damaging your printer if you use unsupported printer cartridges.
Q. What about saving money by refilling my own printer black ink cartridges?
A. Many printer owners ask, "The cartridge was filled once, so why not refill it over and over?" Technically, any brand of ink cartridge can be refilled but the results are highly variable. Very often the refill kits available for colour and black ink cartridges do not contain quality components. In some cases, refilling the cartridge can cause it to cease working. Although refilling cartridges yourself isn't always the best choice, there are refill stations popping up in many shopping centres.
Q. Can ink cartridges be recycled?
A. Yes. With some help from customers, recycling printer ink cartridges has become a reality. Many manufacturers provide freepost envelopes for customers to return empty cartridges. If your brand of printer cartridge doesn't offer this service, ask at an office supply store, where recycling programs are common. You may be able to receive a credit for new cartridges if you recycle your old ones at the right store.
Q. How long do inkjet cartridges last?
A. That depends on the size (capacity) of the cartridge and your printing habits, (the amount of ink that's used on each page). For example, if you print 100 words on a page, the cartridge will last longer than if you print 300 words on a page. Also, photos use much more ink than text. As far as capacity goes, it ranges from about 9 ml to about 42 ml (0.3 to 1.4 ounces).
Q. Is it true that using a remanufactured or compatible cartridge rather than a cartridge from my printer's manufacturer will void my warranty?
A. According to industry giant Hewlett-Packard (HP), you will not void your warranty by using non-HP ink toner cartridges. Most other manufacturers, including the makers of Canon ink cartridges have followed suit after pressure from the European Union and the fair trade laws in the US. Bear in mind that the print head is usually contained in the cartridge, so remanufactured black inkjet cartridges may deliver inferior print quality.
The practice of using remanufactured black ink cartridges has many pros and cons with UK customers. Why not let our in-house experts sort out the details for you?
